Crystals 101
What are crystals?
Crystals are stones that are formed from the fusions of different gases, constant stress between the plates of the earth, changes in the temperature that are deep within the earth’s crust and the upheaval of molten material. The numerous variations of crystals’ shape, color and sizes are a result of the absorption of diversified minerals.
What can crystals be used for?
Crystals have been used for decoration, healing, meditation, the balancing of chakras, protection, divination, energy enhancement, magick, attracts positivity, and may be used as a talisman or amulet.
Cleansing:
Once you receive your crystal(s) you should cleanse your crystal(s). Cleansing crystals is important as they will have absorbed many different energies and you want your crystals to be clear from outside energies. Some ways you can cleanse your crystals are: sunlight, moonlight, salt, selenite, incense, sage and palo santos. It is important to note that not all crystals can be cleansed with sunlight or salt. It is important to do your research before cleansing your crystals! Once your crystal(s) are cleansed they are ready for you to program your intention(s). Crystals should be cleansed regularly (daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly depending on how often you use it).
Hardness:
Hardness is a term used to determine the mineral’s ability to withstand surface scratching. Founded by Friedrich Mohs in 1822, the measurement scale is called “Mohs Scale of Hardness”. Mohs’ scale ranges from 1-10, with 1 being the softest mineral (like Talc) and 10 being the hardness (like a diamond). According to the Mohs’ Scale minerals rated 1&2 can be scratched with a fingernail, minerals rated 3 can be marked by using a copper coin, minerals rated 4 can be marked easily by using a blade of a knife, minerals rated 5 can be marked by using a blade blade of a knife with difficulty, minerals rated 6 can be marked with a steel file, minerals rated 7 can be marked with a steel nail, minerals rated 8-10 can be marked with a masonry drill bit.
